Happy Labor Day!

I searched for an appropriate picture to put here but nothing I did looks like anything in a labor day photo! Minus a little online shopping. Hello cheap F21 jewelry and free shipping (use code LABOR11)!

No cookouts, no family get togethers, no adorable red/white/blue inspired outfits, no goodbye summer party.

Just me and the L-bug. Chilling in the house all day in our pajamas.

M started his new job today. Oh, I didn't tell you? He got a temp job working with SAIC/FEMA to help with disaster relief from hurricane Irene. I am not sure how our days will look like from now on. When he works, he should be pulling 12 hour days, possibly 7 days a week. Hopefully something more permanent will come along but for now, we're thankful for this small blessing.

With summer coming to an end (although in NC, it'll be a little longer before the cool temps really settle in), here's to a cozy and hopeful next chapter in our lives. I am more than ready for a change. Cool temperatures. Cozy days tucked under a blanket watching "You've Got Mail" or "When Harry met Sally". Jumping in leaves with L. Apple picking and pumpkin carving. Apple desserts. Oh Fall, I am so ready for you.

GIVE IT 30 DAYS

September 1, 2011

I've been slacking with eating habits and workouts and being lazy. It's so hard to get my butt up in gear and do something.

But, I'm gonna give it 30 days. The whole month of September. For making better choices. For actually trying. For making some kind of dent into the change I want to see happen.

I started today with a healthy breakfast, a healthy (and well-portioned) snack and a not-so-healthy lunch. Ha!

I'm gonna do it. I have to. Because, this has to be my best year yet.

We are okay.

Hurricane Irene hit us late Friday night. We lost power from Saturday morning around 8:30 AM to Sunday late afternoon around 4 pm. We were the lucky ones to get power back. Although as I type this power has been off/on. A lot of people in my town and the surrounding areas are still out of power. My brother didn't get it back until yesterday afternoon. The county over from ours was hit the hardest. Many people there are still trapped. Their houses are destroyed, the have no food or water. They are under orders to boil all water and all restaurants/food services have been shut down in case of food contamination. The news says that many people climbed to their attics to get away from the water flooding their homes and the streets and sadly, they are expecting to not find them alive.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wrote this earlier...skip to a few days later.

We lost power again for a few hours but it's since been restored. The communities are banning together, helping each other out. News channels are taking donations and keeping the news out there. We've donated canned/boxed food, water, bread, peanut butter. Whatever we had that could help. A lot of people still don't have power or food or shelter. Some people are still unaccounted for.

My family and friends are okay. I am beyond thankful and blessed for that. We've managed to clean up our yard and others. The basement is still a bit of a mess as we've got our eyes on another storm possibly headed our way in the next two weeks and it would be silly to put things back in their place to pick them up again. Let's hope it dies out at sea!

Here's some pictures of the mess in our neighborhood.

2. taking a walk to check out the damage
3. tree down on my neighbors house
4. debris in our front yard
5. tree blocking other end of our road

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

August 31, 2011

It's my birthday! As of midnight this morning, I am 25. Half way to 50, as my sister reminds me ;)

But that's okay. It's gonna be an awesome year.

Today has been low-key. M over-spoiled me with a cruiser bicycle and a CHI flat iron. We had lunch at Chic-Fil-A then picked up dinner supplies at Walmart. We were supposed to take a bike ride downtown and stop by the library to grab me some new books. But due to the hurricane, the bike rentals at the store downtown were in storage and the library was still closed.

Instead, we're planning to have a simple date night at the movies. I've been wanting to go see The Help and get use out of my new wedge heels ;) Right after a homecooked meal of chimichangas, rice & beans from my lovely hubs.

we're bunkering down.

I guess my 24th year is going out with a bang. I turn 25 in 6 days. 3 of those will be spent bunkering down in the house during this major hurricane.

A lot of evacuations are happening on the east coast of North Carolina. So far, we don't have one in my town and until we do, we're sticking it out. Where would we go anyways? This hurricane is HUGE. I wasn't really worried until this morning. Our area hasn't seen a hurricane this size in about 20 years. Yikes.

We are expecting 17 inches of rain and 100 mph winds. Today has been spent cleaning up the yard of any thing that will go flying away in the winds, picking up the floor of the basement and moving things upstairs and we'll be putting buckets/bricks underneath the furniture soon.

This will be my last post for awhile. I expect we'll lose power, probably overnight. Maybe tomorrow. We're hoping for the best, preparing for the worst. At least, without the distraction of the TV and the computer, I can get some knitting & reading in. And, some quality family time in. Maybe a board game over candlelight ;)

I'll be sure to pop-in when all this is over! Until then, if you are expecting the storm - be safe and smart!
