What My Kids Are Reading

March 29, 2022

Do your kids love to read? Lia loves to read. She's old enough now that our bedtime stories has transitioned to her staying up for hours and reading on her own and Nico is just finding his groove in being able to read some books himself and so far, he's a fan! I've encouraged them to read and surrounded them with books since birth!

Both kiddos get to go to the school library a few times a month and it's always interesting to see Nico's choices! I'm trying to be open-minded and read/listen to the books he wants as he's getting older and finding his own opinion. Even if they are about underwear-wearing superhero and poop. Because a lot of times they are about that. Seven-year old boys are fun!

So, today I'm rounding up some of the books the kids' have been loving lately!

This whole series but in particular, this one for Nico.

And, Olive's favorite book is currently this soft, crinkly style book that she can chew on!

What are your kid's favorites? I'm always looking for new books for them!

Favorite Bins & Containers for Organizing

Who else is spring cleaning? It's all over my instagram feed lately. All the cool new mops and sponges and everything that's going to whip my house and life into shape. But, well, I hate cleaning. It's one of those things that I dread doing every week. Mostly because my kids are just going to go behind me and undo everything I just did. You know? But also, I really need a clean and clutter-free space to keep my mind in check.

Organizing, though? That's my thing. I'll buy all the bins and whip up a messy closet into an organized dream. Now, my kids still can't figure out how to put their stuff IN the bins some days but it's all good because I love a good closet full of pretty bins and having systems in place are always better than a free-for-all no system.

So, since a friend convinced me to co-host a yard sale with her this weekend and because my cluttered brain could use a break, I went out this week to grab some functional storage bins. Mostly for Nico's closet that I decided this week needs massive help but also for ideas for other spaces. I plan on buying pieces as I find a need for them and organizing one small space at a time. This keeps me from starting 10 different projects and quitting them all mid-way.

Target is the place lately for all things bins! I strapped Olive into the Ergo and we browsed the aisles grabbing things to give Nico's closet a refresh. Because if I step on one more hot wheel, I may go mad.

These are my current favorites for the kids closet. I redid Lia's last month and they worked out so well. We chose clear so the kids can easily see which bin they need and I love that they are stackable and under $5!

I also grabbed this huge bin on wheels for his hot wheel masses. I've yet to find a good way to store all the tracks and sets and giant pieces but I think this is doing the trick. He can easily grab the handle and wheel it out when he wants to play them. We originally had three random baskets that would crash over in the middle of the night. So, you know, that was fun.

I live for glass jars in the kitchen for things we use regularly. Coffee, flour, sugar. And, for the bunny treats and food. We store Scout's jars in this basket in the bathroom closest to his cage. We also use the same bins in the bathroom for bandaids, extra hair ties, baby wipes/diapers.

And, black wire baskets. Those I grab whenever I find them on sale because we use them literally everywhere in the house for storage.

Other than that, I gravitate towards containers that are either a clear sturdy plastic/glass and anything white. It keeps whatever you are storing and the space it's in fresh and clean! Even if it's just an illusion because of the kids!

Our sweet chunk is 6 months today! Of course, I am behind and don't have 6 month photos taken yet so I thought it would be a good time to share all the other months' photos that I didn't share yet. Because, you know, I'm forever behind in some form or another!

Three months...
Started sleeping through the night!
Smiles and recgonize all of us.
Learned to giggle!
Killed it at her first trip to Disney!
Decided she doesn't hate baths.
Can hold her own toys.
Wears size 0-3 months mostly and size 1 diapers.

Four months...
Transitioned to a sleep sack.
Learned how to roll over!
Is the smiliest, giggliest babe.
Loves tummy time.
Starting sleeping on her tummy.
Had her first ER trip. She's fine!
Obsessed with Nico.
Learned to suck her thumb and it's the cutest.
Wears size 0-3/3-6 months and size 2 diapers.

Five months...

Loves her swaddle blankets and her swing.
Eats her toes.

She's seriously the best babe. We are all obsessed with her and I sound like a broken record at this point but she was so perfectly and graciously made for our crew!

This Week's Dinners

Calling this week's plan "whatever I can pull together on the first week of soccer practices"! Making double batches of rice and relying on the slow cooker to help combat the crazy evenings that go by in a blink. I swear, one minute it's 4:30 and the next it's 7:30 and we're late for bedtime routine again.

A Festive March Basket

Have you guys heard of occasion bins? I fell into a rabbit hole of them on Pinterest last month and I'm obsessed. I love all things party & paper goods but never picked anything up because I didn't know what to do with it and it seemed wasteful to buy all the tiny things with no plans to use them. Enter the occasions bin - they've been bringing so much joy!

I can happily pick up those fun-shaped paper plates and pretty jars of sprinkles all year long now! My kids love these bins. Using glass cups and silly straws make their after-school snack time special and a rainbow shaped plate perks up breakfast time. Their favorite thing about them is seeing what new silly straw shape I can find next!

I've been picking up stuff as I go and plan to reuse leftovers. TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Walmart are the best to grab little things. And, definitely don't sleep on Target's dollar section and Hobby Lobby's paper party supplies. I grabbed a large storage bin from Target and just store everything in there in our closet (separate from typical holiday decorations) to have handy when it's time to switch out the basket fillers.

It's seriously so fun!

Around Here

I'm waiting for the babe to fall asleep so I can sneak away for a quick shower and I wanted to pop on here with a little "what's been going on" post. It's pretty clear that updating things isn't my jam lately. I've been all-consumed with parenting, selling Girl Scout cookies (the stories I have, you guys!), and navigating through the beginning of pollen season - cue everyone getting sick.

The kids are growing & thriving! Nico is busy making friends, planning sleepovers, and getting very excited for soccer practice to start this week. We're also dealing with some medical testing/procedures this week to try and find an answer for some GI issues he's been dealing with for years. Keep your fingers crossed for us! Olive is trying solids, outgrowing all of her clothes, and rolling over like a champ. Lia is hustling through girl scouts, school, and her upcoming soccer season. We're deep in the midst of the tween years over here with her and it's not for the faint-hearted.

Life has been full and sweet and good around here. I hope it's been the same for you!
