The Holiday Weekend

Five days at home with no virtual zoom school and no real plans was bliss. We spent Thanksgiving day hanging out at home, just the four of us. We made monkey muffins for breakfast and snuggled up to watch the parade. And, we set out a new Christmas puzzle and worked on it all weekend.

It was a gorgeous, cloudy day so we pulled our dining table out to the deck and dined out there. The usual menu - roasted herb turkey, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes...and, a giant skillet cookie topped with ice cream to cap the night off.

The rest of the weekend was filled with family soccer games in the backyard, rounds of video games, tree trimming, stringing lights on the house, watching holiday movies, and visiting the big man in red himself!

There was also lots of errands and grocery shopping and loads of laundry. Real life sprinkled in amongst the magic and cheer.

Counting down the days until our next holiday weekend!

Our Thanksgiving Menu

It's going to be just the four of us spending Thanksgiving together at home this year. Our little crew doing just our thing! We've actually spent the last couple of Thanksgivings at home so I'm well-adversed in the 'roasting a turkey' department and just really excited for a few cozy days off.

It's been a mess of a year. Yet, we still have so much to be grateful for!

We're going to make the most of our day together. Making one of the kid's favorite breakfast food, setting the table with our fancy glasses and decorating with the leftover pumpkins I banished to the garage last week, and snuggling up with the parade on the TV.

We'll probably talk about going out and getting a Christmas tree and play a game or two. And maybe, just maybe, our elf will make a slightly early appearance. This season is all about magic, after all.

Wishing you a happy, happy Thanksgiving!

PS. These are the only mashed potatoes we make and they are the best ever.

What I read in October

This month had a good mix of thrillers and just everyday stories!

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires was exactly as it was described. "Steel Magnolias meets Dracula". The 80's vibe was a major player in this novel. I laughed, I cringed, I occasionally inwardly wondered why I chose this book and in the end, I was pretty happy with it.

The Voting Booth is a YA novel, which isn't usually my type, but it was the perfect read leading up to November and the looming election.

Eleanor Oliphant, Friends and Strangers, The Secrets We Kept and What You Wish For were all solid reads. Lots of family, love, life situations. I really liked them all.

When No One is Watching was... different. I had to finish it as I can't not finish any thriller book I start. But, this one crawled along and I wasn't sure what was really going on and then the ending kind of exploded all at once.

Ah, then we have Mindy Kaling. Her new mini stories on Amazon are short reads (think 20 pages or so) and her voice shines through the pages. Funny, entertaining, down to earth - just like her!

Here's to all the November reads!
