WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Turkey BLTs.
Homemade chocolate-peanut butter chip cookies.
Streaming old episodes of Glee on my iPhone.
A loud thunderstorm.
Twinkling lights and candles.

It's a girls night in our little nest while M is at work. And after a day of cleaning (for me) and playing (for her), it's nice to just be. Sure, there's a sink full of dishes and a mini-mountain of laundry, but I'm pretty sure the storm is code for "Hey, just stop and be".

At least, it's what I am hearing... Happy Wednesday, xoxo

I know I said this week was going to be our last hurrah to summer but thanks to target clearance and awesome friends that let us pool-less bums borrow theirs, last week was pretty sweet and covered the whole let's hurrah for summer thing.

We had my nephew with us for the week and when we weren't at home hanging out while he did teenage boy things like sleep and play games on his phone, we were at the pool or bowling. And I cooked lots of teenage-approved food like chicken tacos, flautas and pizza. But really, we had fun. It's always interesting to change up the dynamic in the house every now and then. With M working crazy hard with both jobs and school, we girls kind of take over the nest so adding in a teenage boy shook things up. Also, L was glued to his side instead of mine. I call that winning.

The week rounded out with a trip to the doctor for L's swollen bug bite and a drive up to North Carolina for a quick weekend get-away.

Around the web...

The flauta recipe. Double the corn, skip the sour cream. Trust me.

A fun backpack. L has one in the mail!

Is it too early to plan Halloween? 1 2 3 I think the robot is my current favorite.

A modern kids room. I picked up some second-hand shelves recently and I can't wait to recreate those book ledges for Lia's room.

Need a new way to display kid artwork

And my love affair with Tina Fey continues. Also, this.

I have plenty of things to share on the blog this week, mostly weekends with my family. I hope you don't get too tired of picture-heavy posts!

You guys. One long car ride with SO many stops and a feverish, unhappy toddler equals very tired adults. But we are finally home and seriously, it's never looked sweeter. M is out grabbing dinner and I'm unpacking but I'm pretty sure we'll quickly settle in and watch some TV to unwind.

Enjoy your Sunday night!

You guys. This week. Between having my parents in town over the weekend, having my nephew stay all week, lots of play dates and a mysterious bug bite/swollen eye for L, I'm exhausted. But before I dig into the piles of laundry and dishes that are taking over the house and pack us up, I wanted to pop in before it got quiet this weekend.

We're headed off to North Carolina for a quick weekend trip. I'm happy to see my family again so soon! Next week is our last full week of summer, then L starts preschool and oh man, it's going to be crazy. It's our last hurrah of summer.

I'll be back on Monday with the details of our week and lots of pictures! Happy weekending, xoxo.

PS. L's eye is thankfully just fine. A little swollen, but no infection and some allergy medicines should keep it less irritated. You know this whole state is full of bugs when the doctor chuckles and says "it's south carolina, it's what happens". Seriously, I have never seen more bugs than I do living here. I'm not a fan.

She's right in the middle of being three and that means dressing up like a princess almost every single day. Or a fire fighting ballerina. Or pretending to be a dinosaur. Kids are so refreshingly their own little selves. It's awesome.

I feel like I have a weekend hangover. We're moving a little sluggish this morning and it's showing in the quiet way the morning is just going along. Yogurt, chuggington and a little watercolor for her. Blogging and bills for me.

Last week was full of playdates. And a good margarita and girls night out to balance it all. We finally made it to the library to restock our book stash and beat the heat for a little while. I picked up Tina Fey's Bossypants to read again. I like to mark my summers with good books and this one is hilarious.

Mostly this week was about our girl though. We're signing her up for preschool but didn't I just have her yesterday?! It's honestly a crazy, mixed-emotion kind of decision. But we're doing it, most likely stumbling our way along.

Also? Ballet class. Because leotards and tutus on little girls will make cry and laugh. Or at least, that was pretty close to my reaction.

I had a moment yesterday where it really hit me. This is kind of it for the way things are. It's all going to be the way things were. We're letting our kid exist outside of this personal bubble we've lived in for the past 3.5 years. She's going to be thriving in a world that I'm not completely part of. I won't get to see every moment of hers and that kind of sucks. But I am excited for a new routine and new challenges things for her. It's going to be good. Just completely different.

And things around the web...

Need any fun book suggestions for kids? Read this post!

My friend Emily is spending her Summer in Hawaii right now and she's blogging about it here. After our trip in March, I'm still in love with the lifestyle there.

This BBQ chicken is on our must-eat this week list. Along with corn on the cob and juicy watermelon slices. Because it's still Summer for a little while longer.

And I am pretty sure our kitchen needs this & these, while our bedroom needs this. Our house is a constant work in progress and I am always trying to get it to feel like us.

We're going to continue our morning style at the pool this afternoon with some friends. The lazy river is calling my name. Happy Monday!

We spent one evening last weekend in the driveway washing the cars. It was a surprisingly cool summer evening and so good to snag a few fun moments together.

IT'S A SUNNY TUESDAY

July 16, 2013

It's a hot and sunny tuesday in our little town. And suprisingly, no rain. At least, besides what must have been a small shower in the morning while we were tucked away in a dark, cool theater getting our penguin on.

There aren't a whole lot of kid things to do in our town. Our town is full of old retired people, golf courses and alligators. But every summer, the local theater plays dollar movies and it's the cool thing to do. today was happy feet. And despite a few unhappy moments in the movie, L did good. We met up with a few friends (new and old, yay!) and then spent the rest of the day being lazy again.

Still trying to kick the nasty mucus bug out of here. Which sucks.
But I'm also filling up our calendar with fun things and play dates finally. Which is pretty awesome.

Last week was pretty slow, which worked out nicely as we adjusted to being home again and unpacking. Paired with the rain we've spent a lot of time indoors playing with dolls & reading.

I recently finished the Beautiful Creatures series and this book. I'm starting this one now. Has anyone read it?

I finally caught up on The Bachelorette and while I'm not really into any of the guys in particular, the drama is entertaining! It's always crazy how much drama there can be between a group of guys.

This song has been on replay all week. L calls it the lalala song and she's pretty crazy about it.

We're still in the swing of summer and fully enjoying it but with talk lately of ballet classes & preschool for the babe, Fall is creeping into my heart and it may have me swooning just a bit. But to keep things real, we're still eating our weight in frozen yogurt cones every day.

Hello Apparel had an awesome sale over the fourth of July weekend and I snagged up the hello tank for L. I'm bummed that I ordered it a little too small but we love it so.

We had a family car wash the other night. Which turned into a toddler tricycle wash. Have you seen this fun DIY? Wouldn't it be fun for a play date?

And a few things I loved around the internet this week...

This piece on a semi-local bakery. I'm pretty to go visit soon.

I love this etsy shop for children's clothing. My favorites are 1 | 2 | 3.

Are you following The Everyday on bloglovin' yet? I made the switch with Google Reader being offically closed and I'm really liking it.

And the previews for this new comedy have me lauging out loud.

Today is going to be a super lazy day at our house. I'm trying to kick whatever has me feeling crummy and we're gearing up for a busy week. So, happy Monday xoxo

we're back home and we're quickly settling in, making lists and getting things done. New York was so good. we saw family & friends, did a lot of shopping and just kind of hung out. i wish i had taken more pictures. i took the big camera, but it only came out one morning at the bronx zoo. it seemed to rain every time we ventured into the city so i kind of stayed unplugged except for instagram. it's always good to know you were actually "there" when you look back but i really wanted to document the trip better.

we spent a day in long island seeing friends. it's been almost two years since we left and it still feels a little like home. i ran into some old co-workers shopping and we spent a good part of the day at ikea!

we spent a morning at the Bronx Zoo and got pretty personal with a friendly goat.

we took L to a quinceañera and after getting used to all the people and the loud music, she kind of loved it. we got caught in some serious rain while hanging out in the city and taking L to FAO Schwarz. we were soaked by the time we made it back to the train. we ate a lot of popsicles and ice cream bars because that's what you do in a heat wave. we went to a few family parties and watched the fireworks on TV. we're trader joe virgins, so of course we went to two of them. and we dreamed a little about making a life in the city.

we ate at this restaurant. if you are in the city, you should make reservations and eat there. m's uncle is the head chef and trust me, you won't be disappointed.

but mostly, we just relaxed as much as you can when staying on the go. we ate a lot of food we can't get here, we went to the movies, i made a dent in my stack of books and lia spent every minute she could with her cousins.

we were seriously grateful to get back home to the land of central a/c, dishwashers and our bed. i admit, we're kind of spoiled yuppies in those areas. still, New York has our hearts.
