Scout The Lop

Meet Scout, the newest member of our crew!

Lia has wanted a bunny since her first grade teacher had free-roam bunnies as the class pet. I mean, who wouldn't want a fluffy pal after that? We've always been kind of a one-pet family, especially after a trial run with a second dog that didn't work out for us and so another pet wasn't really in the plans for us.

As fate would have it though, the stars aligned and after weeks of talking about getting a bunny from a friend whose bunny had babies and mentally getting on board with the idea of a second pet months before we bring home a new baby, and then deciding that if we get a bunny it should be the breed I've always loved...Scout, our holland lop bun, was secured through our friend who found a local women that had bunnies.

We kept it a surprise until the very last minute. We put together his hutch late at night and hid it with all the supplies a new baby bun needs in the garage. I took the kids out for normal errands while my friend snuck into our house and placed Scout in his hutch. Manny came home for lunch and just casually waited for the kids until I brought them home.

The shock on their faces was worth every minute of holding in the surprise!

They are smitten with Scout. We all are! So smitten in fact that they don't complain when they have to clean out his hutch and litter box 1-2x a day. Which is a total win in my book!

Scout is dreamy and curious and so damn fluffy. He's been with us for a week now and we're working on litter box training and adjusting him to eventually (hopefully) become a free roam bunny. He's quickly becoming a family favorite and joins us for board game nights and watches soccer on the TV with Nico.  Even Toby is starting to, slowly, adjust to him!

The Sunday Edition, 34

What a weekend! We spent time with friends, watched In The Heights (so good!), and did a little plant shopping. We're mentally preparing for the last week of school before summer break. It's bittersweet to wrap up Nico's kindergarten year and Lia's elementary school stage, but we're all excited for a couple of months of fun and sun before routines and life shakes back up.

And here's a few things from around the web this week...

I take thee, Rachel. Who else has been reliving their love of Friend's lately?

In other TV news, Gossip Girl is back!

A gorgeous home tour in Mexico City. Its giving me all the cozy, fresh design vibes.

Potato salad for the summer.

Pots with staircases for bugs! How charming even though bugs kind of freak me out.

I've decided I need to find THE perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe to have tucked away for rainy days or last minute dessert plans for a BBQ with friends (not that this happened to me recently... ha). These are going on my to-try list!

And, the most perfect print we're putting in the nursery.

Enjoy the week, friends!

What I Read In May

I read so many good books last month! The must-reads : Northern Spy, The Four Winds, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (so, so good!). I feel like I'm hitting a good stride with staying attracted to the idea of picking up a book instead of scrolling social media and that's always a good thing. A little habit that's helped me is to make sure I've always got a few good books stocked on my phone (free Kindle downloads or library borrows from Hoopla and Cloud library) for when I forget a book at home.

Northern Spy - A serious must read! Ticked all the boxes for a good, historical novel but not your typical WWII story line. I loved it!

Get a Life, Chloe Brown - A cute, albeit cheesy rom com novel.

Convenience Store Woman - Meh, this one was odd. I didn't hate it and in certain points I could relate to the main character, but it wasn't a favorite.

The Restaurant - I read this one for bookclub. Light, breezy, set on Nantucket. It was a nice story but felt a little too light.

To Tell You the Truth - A decent thriller to break up the mix this month.

The Girls in the Stilt House - This one reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing and while it took me time to really get into it, I'm glad I kept going.

All Along You Were Blooming - I love Morgan Harper Nichols, that's all.

The Four Winds - Another must read. I haven't read a novel based on the depression era (or at least, not in a very long time) and I really enjoyed this one.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Ah, Taylor Jenkins Reid. She did not disappoint. Add this one to your list!

How To Style Grocery Store Flowers

Fresh flowers are one of my most favorite things! There's just something about a gorgeous flower arrangement that brightens my mood. But, they can be expensive (and rightfully so!). But, I thought I'd try my hand at pulling together a scaled down version of some of my favorite arrangement ideas.

Grocery store flowers! Don't knock them until you try them. When I ran my party business, I almost always used grocery store flowers. They are fairly inexpensive and between a few of my favorite grocery stores, I could usually find what I needed.

As far as grocery store flowers go, I'd say Trader Joe's is the best. My closet TJ is about 2 hours away though so I stick with Publix and Kroger and occasionally The Fresh Market.

I grabbed these on a whim when picking up some things for dinner so the choices were pretty limited. I picked up a bundle of beige carnations, a filler bundle that caught my eye, and a handful of greenery. Eucalyptus is my go-to but when my store is out, I settle for whatever greenery I can find.

The arrangement cost me around $12 and took me about 20 minutes or so. I taped off a grid pattern on a vase to help structure the arrangement then I started trimming down all my flowers and put them all in a pile to pull from.

I started with greenery around the outside and a few pieces on the inside then used the carnations and fillers as the bulk of the middle of the arrangement. I personally prefer more greenery with pops of color so I will definitely be doing this again when I can shop around for more options!

I love to use non-traditional vases - milk jugs, vintage crocks, glassware I've painted. The less typical "vase shape", the better. Target usually has a few great vintage-style crocks every season and thrift stores are fun to pick through.

At the end of the day, I've got a pretty good arrangement for $12 and it's definitely bringing some light and joy this gloomy, rainy week!

This Week's Dinners

I gotta say - it's nice to be able to dream up some meals to feed my family instead of feeling sick every time I think of food thats not a fruit. I can't say the appetite is really back, but the food aversions aren't so bad lately and that's a win in my book.

We skipped the meal planning last week since it was just a crazy week. We spent a long weekend out of town and Lia got sick as soon as we got home with some weird 12-hour stomach bug and the kids missed extra days at school. It was a trudge through and fly by our pants kind of week.

I'm hoping this week is a little smoother, though showing up to my doctor appointment an hour late (unknowingly!) isn't giving me the fuzzy feelings. Here's to recovering from that with actually having a dinner plan and the motivation to make a grocery list!

tuesday // pulled pork with a crunchy, lime-y cole slaw (toss together cole slaw mix w/lime, parsley & salt!)

wednesday // pork taquitos

thursday // twice baked potatoes (but I start by baking them according to this recipe so they are extra crispy and salty on the outside!)

friday // homemade pizza
